Section 378π Section 378 of the IPC is a law that defines and punishes the crime of theft in India. Theft is the act of dishonestly taking from the possession of any person, by transferring that property, without that person's consent. Movable property means property that can be moved from one place to another, like money, jewellery, clothes, animals, etc. The punishment for theft is imprisonment up to three years, or a fine, or both. Theft is a cognizable and non-bailable offence, but it can be committed by a person who is in possession of the property. Some examples of theft are: - Cutting a tree on someone else's land and taking it away without their permission. - Luring someone's dog with a bait and taking it after you without his permission. - Driving someone's car or bike without their permission. - Picking someone's pocket or purse without their knowledge.
