New transportation rule in India The new transportation rule in India that has caused a lot of controversy and protest is the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), which is a new criminal law that aims to replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). One of the provisions of the BNS is that it imposes a mandatory death penalty for hit-and-run cases involving death or grievous injury. This has been opposed by many truck drivers and transport associations, who claim that it is unfair and harsh. They have also raised concerns about the lack of consultation and the hasty implementation of the new law. The truckers’ body, the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), had called for a three-day nation-wide strike from January 1 to January 3, 2024, to protest against the new law. However, after receiving an assurance from the government that the new law will be implemented only after proper consultation and discussion with all stakeholders, the AIMTC decided to call off the strike on January 2, 2024. The AIMTC representatives also met with the Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla on January 2, 2024, to voice their grievances and suggestions regarding the new law. The government has defended the new law as a necessary measure to curb the rising cases of road accidents and fatalities in India, which are among the highest in the world. The government has also claimed that the new law will bring more transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the criminal justice system. The government has also assured that the new law will not affect the rights and interests of the innocent and law-abiding citizens.
